Seven Steps To Writing Success : Tightening Tension
This year in Room 18 we have been working on “7 Steps to Writing Success” focusing on narrative writing.
In Semester 1 we focused on writing creative “Sizzling Starts” to capture our reader’s attention to make them want to read on.
Once we have our reader’s attention, how do we keep it?
To write convincingly, you have to make your reader feel like they are part of the action. For the last two weeks, we have been looking at how to do this in the step “Tightening Tension”. This involves children taking a scene from a story and brainstorming the senses of the characters : look, see, feel, touch, hear and smell.
We started our session watching some youtube video clips of bush fires and the reactions of fire fighters who were stuck in dangerous fires. We then brainstormed words we could use to describe the main senses of our characters in small groups and as a whole class.
We then used our words to enhance our scene from the prompt “You are caught in a bush fire”.
We repeated this process with the story prompt… You are caught in a storm at sea.

POET-TREE by Miss Vogler
This term we have been focusing on poetry during our writing sessions. The children have learnt about cinquains and haiku poetry. We will be moving on to colour poetry in the coming weeks. Once the children had published their poems, we added them to the POET-TREE.

My name is Luke Riseberry, I moved from Perth originally in 2004 for only one term but have been lucky enough to call Kalgoorlie my home ever since.
My first two years in Kalgoorlie I taught at Hannans Primary School. I taught a Year 3 class and a Year 2 class. I was then excited to hear that I had won a Merit Select position at North Kalgoorlie Primary School.
I have taught at North Kalgoorlie Primary School since 2006, with this year being my 13th year.
I have achieved ’Senior Teacher’ in the Education Department which acknowledges the extra roles and responsibilities I have at our school. I have taught Year 3 for the majority of my time at NKPS and have been the Year 3 Phase leader for the last 9 years.
My wife currently teaches Year 1 at NKPS and my daughter has just entered Year 3. I am passionate about North Kalgoorlie Primary School and look forward to establishing a positive working partnership with yourself and your child.
The school website is an amazing resource which enables us to post photos and activities that your child completes throughout the year. I regularly update the Year 3 page and add a reminder on our classroom notice board or in class newsletters to remind you to check the page.
