Term One Overview
This term in English, we will be focusing on reading comprehension through the use of modelled and shared reading of Big Books. We will also focus on fluency, sight words and tracking while reading. In writing, there will be a strong focus on sentence structure and we will complete daily writing to encourage children to write confidently and independently. Children will participate in a simple spelling test at the beginning of the term and they will be placed in focus phonics and spelling groups to target their individual needs in this area.
In Maths we will be exploring number patterns and looking at place value of numbers to 100. We will also build on our prior knowledge of addition and look at strategies we can use to assist us to solve these quickly and confidently. These strategies include; rainbow facts, fact families, addition property of zero and commutative property of addition. In Measurement, we will be measuring and comparing the lengths of objects using uniform informal units.
This term in History we will be focusing on families. We will explore differences in family sizes, structures and roles today and how these have changed or remained the same over time.
This term in Health, we will focus on our ability to use communication and interactions to promote the best health and wellbeing for ourselves and others. We will do this by exploring ways to appreciate and encourage others and learning positive ways to react to our own emotions in different situations.
Week One Update
What a fantastic first week we have had in Room 13. We have spent time getting to know one another through various games and activities and we have had a great time sharing our 'Me Bags'. We have set goals for the 2019 school year and have reviewed the school and classroom rules and expectations. On Friday we talked about 'Sprinkling Kindness' and ways that we show kindness to others. We even made our very own 'donuts' using biscuits, icing and sprinkles. We were even lucky enough to be chosen to appear in the Kalgoorlie Miner - see the article below!
Week Two Update
Week 2 of Year One. At what fun we are having in Room 13. We have settled in very well and are getting to know one another through lots of games and getting to know you activities. We have revised all initial sounds and have completed our very first spelling tests. The results of this test will assist in putting students into targeting spelling groups. We have embraced the warm school days with a Summer Art Lesson, here are some of our wonderful watermelons! The others can be seen, hanging in our classroom. Be sure to check them out!
Week Three Update
This week marked the first week of On Entry Testing. Mrs Causer has been very busy completing the test, one-on-one with each student while Mrs S continues on with the teaching and learning programme in the classroom. This week we explored the big book 'The Kings Cake'. We had a great time predicting the events in the story, but would have never guessed the hilarious ending of the gardener creating cake soup. We also dived deeper into the text to look at the setting, traits of characters and the sequence of events that occurred. Perhaps you could include some of these comprehension questions when you complete home reading each night, i.e. Who is the main character? What are some of their traits? What is the main setting? What does this story remind you of? Can you tell me what happened at the beginning, middle or end of the story?
Week Four Update
Wow - what a HOT week it has been. This week in Maths we have been exploring number bonds (part-part-whole). Number bonds are also often referred to as 'number pairs'. They are simply the pairs of numbers that make up a given number. We have been playing a fantastic online game to reinforce our knowledge in this area. The game came be accessed by clicking on the below button and I am sure the children will be eager to show you what they have learnt, as they create a unique new monster.
