Welcome to term 2! I am Miss Zoe Patterson and I am very excited to have taken over from Mrs Yvonne Causer as she goes on maternity leave. I am very excited to be teaching your child in Year One. I am looking forward to what the year brings and watching each child thrive on their learning journey. You will find that most routines have been kept the same as I aim to make this a smooth transition.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. My contact information can be found in the Welcome Note.
This term in English, we will be focusing on reading comprehension strategies through the use of modelled and shared reading of Big Books. We will also begin our small guided reading groups where students will receive targeted support for their reading level. We will continue to focus on fluency, sight words and tracking while reading. In writing, we will continue to work on sentence structure and parts of speech, including nouns and verbs, with a strong focus on adjectives leading into descriptive writing. We will endeavour to complete daily writing to encourage us to write confidently and independently and work on improving our handwriting. Children will participate in a simple spelling test at the beginning of the term and they will be placed in focus phonics and spelling groups to target their individual needs in this area.
In Maths we will continue to explore and build out knowledge of place value of numbers to 100 and practise strategies to help us quickly and confidently solve problems using addition and subtraction. We will begin to look at the concept of time and telling time to the nearest half hour as well as how to recognise and describe Australian coins. We will also begin to look at 2D shapes and their features as well as patterns that we can build. .
This term in History we will be focusing on past and present. We will compare and contrast daily lives, toys, games, clothing, communication/technology, school, etc and how these have changed or remained the same over time.
