Term Two Overview
Welcome back, I am looking forward to getting started into Term 2 with lots of learning to be done, with some fun along the way. Due to some school timetabling changes, our weekly schedule looks a little different in Room 15. Please see the note, reminder magnet and timetable for further clarification.
In English we are learning how to write a narrative and also learning to use lots of descriptive language to enhance our writing. We are also continuing to improve our reading through a range of strategies such as activating prior knowledge and making connections.
In Maths we are learning about money, number patterns, length and time. We are also learning about 2D shapes, halves and quarters and continuing to learn different addition and subtraction strategies.
In Health we are learning about different cultures, in History we are finding out about Kalgoorlie history and in Art we are discovering different artists.
Week One Update
A short week to get the term underway, the children were excited to see their friends again and tell us all about their holidays. This week we were introduced to our term topic, Fairytales and talked about all that was going to be involved (with a few surprises along the way). In Health we will be talking about diversity and learning about different cultures and change. To start off the topic we looked at our selves and our personal strengths. See the awesome work below.
Week Two Update
WARNING....look out for the GIANT Beanstalk!! A giant beanstalk has appeared in our classroom (the hook for our Talk 4 writing unit). Later on in the term, the students will be given the opportunity to plant their very own MAGIC beans. This week we also taste tested various beans, some YUM and some not so nice. Fun was had by all and it was a very entertaining Friday afternoon.
Week Three Update
This week was all about THE THREE LITTLE PIGS. The children were very creative in their news discussions about what they would build a house from, I was a little disappointed that there was no chocolate mentioned...apparently it was a BAD idea anyway, as it would simply melt (silly Mrs Causer). In STEM we designed and constructed a house for one of the little pigs using only 12 mini-marshmallows and toothpicks. These were then tested by a new era BIG BAD WOLF (Mrs Causer's Hairdryer). We had lots of anxious builders, but I am very please to announce that we had a 100% success rate, not one house was blown down. See our awesome houses below;
Term 1: Week One Update
What a fantastic first week we have had in Room 15. We have spent time getting to know one another through various games and activities and we have had a great time sharing our 'Me Bags'. We have set goals for the 2018 school year and have reviewed the school and classroom rules and expectations. On Friday we talked about 'Sprinkling Kindness' and ways that we show kindness to others. We even made our very own 'donuts' using apple, icing and sprinkles. See our marvellous and very yummy creations below;
Term 1: Week Two Update
This week we have been very busy completing initial assessments for spelling, sight words, reading and number. Once these initial assessments have been completed we will begin our spelling, guided reading and math group programs. We have also created some marvellous work and our room is starting to look fantastic with all our work on display. We got to know each other a little more by completing a maths piece titled 'Figure Me Out'. Here are some of the children's finished work pieces. Can you figure out how old, how many pets or what their house number is?
Term 1: Week Three Update
Time certainly does fly when you are learning and having so much fun....week 3 already! This week we were lucky enough to use the school's new laptops for the first time. Every Thursday the students in Room 15 will use these to complete various tasks. This week we used Microsoft Word to type, cut and paste. This was a little different without a mouse, but the students did fantastic. Our work will be on display soon. Here are some pictures of the students busy at work, don't they look so tech-savvy!
Term 1: Week Four Update
This week we have continued to explore recount writing and have again mastered our reading stations during our guided reading sessions, we are super lucky to have Mrs Borchet's extra set of hands during our English Blocks. The students are progressing in leaps and bounds already and have made a super smooth transition into the routines of Room 15 (they even keep Mrs Causer on her toes to keep to our daily schedule). We participated in the squash incursion during our Sport session and it was LOTS of fun. It certainly was the highlight of the week!!
Term 1: Week Five Update
In Maths this week we have been revising and introducing addition strategies like rainbow facts (to 10 and 20), turn around facts and counting on. We are beginning to look at word problems and have been using thinkboards to answer number stories. Our Signpost books (whole school Maths textbook) have arrived, so we are looking forward to integrating them into our future Maths blocks. Every Thursday, as part of our spelling program, we go 'hands-on' with our spelling list. We have previously used whiteboards, chalk, water and white crayon and paint to spell our words but this week we used the windows in our classroom. The children used whiteboard markers to write their words 3 times each, it was lots of fun. The highlight of this week has to be when Mrs Causer used a permanent marker on the whiteboard to introduce our phonics sound of the week.....oops! Thanks to some of the Room 15 children for dobbing me into Mrs Culver...hehe! We now have a new whiteboard on its way, thanks Mrs Culver for your hard work in finding us a replacement.
Term 1: Week Six Update
A short but busy week was had in Room 15 this week. We created some outstanding recounts around our long weekend adventures and have begun editing our own work to check for mistakes, missed punctuation and grammar errors. For our sensory spelling this week we mixed playdough and lego to create a 'stamped' effect, check out some of our work below. We are looking forward to the book fair next week and wish all our older siblings the best of luck at the sports carnival on Friday (secretly we are really just looking forward to having the WHOLE school to ourselves for the day ;) ).
Term 1: Week Seven Update
This week we have been exploring fractions in Maths with a focus on halves and quarters of both collections and numbers. We have had lots of fun using the laptops to create our own pizzas (that looked good enough to eat). We then used these to help us model wholes, halves and quarters and some students even looked at thirds and eighths. We were also the FIRST class to visit the book fair on Tuesday morning, which was every exciting. I have seen lots of Room 15 faces with their families at the book fair in the mornings and afternoons, so thank you for supporting the fair. If you haven't had a chance to check it out, make sure you get there next week. The book fair is in the school hall and is open all of Week 8 before and after school. It's a great opportunity to get children excited about reading. Check out their excitement in the below snaps;
