We're Ready to Grow in Room 10!
My name is Alysia Allen and I would like to welcome you to a new school year and in particular to Room 10, Year 6. This is my fourth year here with Year 6 at North Kalgoorlie Primary School.
I am looking forward to an exciting year!
Term 3
Curriculum Overview
English:
This term in Reading we are focusing on the teaching of reading strategies such as synthesising, critical reflection and inferring. In both Reading and Writing the students will be looking at Poetry. In Speaking and Listening, the focus is on active listening skills and speaking in both small group and whole class discussion. We will be performing our very own Poetry Recital and giving directions. Our novel study this term is The Happiest Refugee by Anh Do.
In Spelling, Year 6 is following the senior school approach of the Words Their Way Spelling Program. Students have been placed into spelling groups according to their stage. Lists will also include subject specific vocabulary, theme words and words from their own writing.
Mathematics:
This term the Year 6 classes will be focusing on the following content in Mathematics:
Number and Algebra – mental calculations, times-tables, addition and subtraction of decimals (and use of estimation and rounding). Continue and create sequences involving whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Describe the rule used to create the sequence.
Measurement and Geometry – Connect volume and capacity and their units of measurement. Introduce the Cartesian coordinate system using all four quadrants. Investigate angles on a straight line, angles at a point and vertically opposite angles.
Statistics and Probability – Conduct chance experiments with both small and large numbers of trials using appropriate digital technologies. Compare observed frequencies across experiments with expected frequencies.
It is imperative in Year 6 that your child knows their times tables. We encourage the students to continue to learn these at home to improve their recall of all the tables to x12.
HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences):
We delve in to ‘Australia's Connections to Asia’. This term the students will be learning about the location of teh major countries of the Asia region in relation to Australia and the geographical , economic, demographic and social characteristics. We will also study the world's cultural diversity, including that of its indigenous peoples who live throughout the world.
Health:
The PATHS program is an essential part of our Health program this term. This is a social and emotional program that covers areas such as self control, emotional understanding, positive self esteem, relationships and interpersonal problem solving skills.
Art:
In Art this semester we will be focusing on Art Skills and Processes. Students will continue to develop their ability to respond to artwork, created by themselves and by others. We will discuss as a class and on our own which elements of art can be seen in their work. We will then select one piece created by each artist and recreate the work ourselves. Once the art is complete it will be time to reflect on our own work and have it reviewed by a peer to comment on which features have been included, why and what impact they have on the interpreter.
Homework:
Homework this term will reflect our school priorities of Literacy and Numeracy. Across the school students are required to do home-reading. In Upper Primary this takes the form of independent reading. Students are to select their own book to read and will record their reading on their Home Reading Sheet. The Home-Reading Record may be signed each day or at the end of the week. Students are required to hand these in each Friday. Students will be required to complete a different reading activity at home each week based on the book that they have been reading.
I also encourage your child to continue their learning and revision of the times tables.
Throughout the year students may also be given research or class work to complete at home.
If you have any queries regarding homework please do not hesitate to call or email me at the school.
I am looking forward to an exciting year!
