HASS- Business & Economics

In Year 6 this unit of work is linked in with an annual school event we call 'Fun-time-lunch-time'. This event, which is held on Friday of week 5, see's each class create an idea for a stall which they then run for our school community. The event raises funds which are put back into the school to benefit all students.

All year levels, apart from Year 6, come up with one stall idea for their whole class. However, in Year 6 the students choose groups, come up with their own business plans and then take care of all the roles that come with running a business such as: determining which resources will be needed, start up costs, advertising , promotional deals, the rostering of staff on shifts etc.

In addition to planning, stocking and advertising their stall they will be learning about concepts such as:
  • Trade offs and the cost of lost opportunities
  • Goods & services
  • The role/effects of consumer decisions
  • Primary, secondary and tertiary industries and
  • Not-for-profit organisations
Our daily literacy block is broken down into three parts.

First is spelling, during which our whole Year 6 cohort follow the differentiated spelling program 'Words Their Way'.

Second is reading. This term our class will be focusing on a variety of reading strategies such as
  • Finding information,
  • Concluding
  • Summarising
  • Inferring
  • Cause and effect
  • Point of view and purpose
We will be using the text 'Teaching comprehension strategies' in which the skill in broken down into chunks which scaffold the children in their learning. It also dictates which sections are to be completed as a class, which are practice for the students and which are for them to do on their own, so that they can demonstrate their understanding of the skill.

In addition to this we will be reading the novel Barrumbi Kids as a class. An exciting an funny first novel about children moving between Aboriginal and white cultures.

Third is writing. In writing this term we are looking at persuasive elements used by writers and writing our own persuasive texts

This will also tie in with our Business & Economics unit and Fun-time-lunch-time, as we will look at the techniques advertisers use to persuade people to buy their products.

Furthermore, both Year 6 classes are going to be joining forces and writing persuasive arguments for/against different debating topics. We think that they will have a lot of fun with this topic, arguing over controversial topics and hope that they will enhance their public speaking in the process.

Art

In art this semester our focus is on responding to art,  so as well as creating the art we are teaching the students  how to respond to their own art and that of others.

This term we are going to be recreating various examples of pop art by artists such as:
  • Roy Lichtenstein
  • Romero Britto
  • Andy Warhol
  • Keith Haring

Health

In health this term we will be:
  • Investigating the role of preventative health in promoting and maintaining health, safety and well-being for individuals in their communities
  • Exploring how participation in outdoor activities supports personal and community health and wellbeing and creates connections to natural and man-made environments and
  • Learning about protective behaviours which supports emotional intelligence, empowerment, assertiveness, problem-solving and an understanding of safety.
